Alternative Transportation Services or Wheelchair Vans are used as a safe and reliable alternative to BLS transportation when a patient does not meet the medical necessity standards for ambulance stretcher as set forth by their insurance provider. This can often serve as a more affordable method of transportation as well. 

In order to be transported via ATS the patient should be able to transfer to a wheelchair with minimal assistance and not suffer from altered mental status. In addition, these transports must be scheduled and paid for in advance. Hospitals and Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) are offered these services under contract.
